Guessing and Compression : A Large Deviations Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
The problem of guessing a random string is studied. It arises in the analysis of the strength of secret-key cryptosystems against guessing attacks. Expected number of guesses, or more generally moments of the number of guesses needed to break the cryptosystem grow exponentially with the length of the string. This thesis studies the rate of exponential growth of these moments using the theory of large deviations. A close relation between guessing and compression is first established. For systems with large key rates, it is shown that if the source’s sequence of so-called information spectrum random variables satisfies the large deviation property with a certain rate function, then the limiting guessing exponent exists and is a scalar multiple of the Legendre-Fenchel dual of the rate function. This is then used to rederive several prior results. The large deviations approach brings to light the relevance of information spectrum in determining guessing exponents. For systems with key-rate constraints, bounds are derived on the limiting guessing exponents for general sources. The obtained bounds are shown to be tight for stationary memoryless, Markov, and unifilar sources, thus recovering some known results. The bounds are obtained by establishing a close relationship between error exponents and correct decoding exponents for fixed rate source compression on the one hand and exponents for guessing moments on the other.

An Introduction To Guessing
Some interesting results on a guessing wiretapper’s performance on a Shannon cipher system are summarized. The performance metrics are exponents of guessing moments and probability of large deviations. Connections with compression and the game of twenty questions are discussed. Asymptotic optimality of guessing attacks based on Lempel-Ziv coding lengths is highlighted.
متن کاملImplementation of VlSI Based Image Compression Approach on Reconfigurable Computing System - A Survey
Image data require huge amounts of disk space and large bandwidths for transmission. Hence, imagecompression is necessary to reduce the amount of data required to represent a digital image. Thereforean efficient technique for image compression is highly pushed to demand. Although, lots of compressiontechniques are available, but the technique which is faster, memory efficient and simple, surely...
متن کاملFUZZY LINEAR REGRESSION BASED ON LEAST ABSOLUTES DEVIATIONS
This study is an investigation of fuzzy linear regression model for crisp/fuzzy input and fuzzy output data. A least absolutes deviations approach to construct such a model is developed by introducing and applying a new metric on the space of fuzzy numbers. The proposed approach, which can deal with both symmetric and non-symmetric fuzzy observations, is compared with several existing models by...
متن کاملCorrecting the stress-strain curve in hot compression test using finite element analysis and Taguchi method
In the hot compression test friction has a detrimental influence on the flow stress through the process and therefore, correcting the deformation curve for real behavior is very important for both researchers and engineers. In this study, a series of compression tests were simulated using Abaqus software. In this study, it has been employed the Taguchi method to design experiments by the factor...
متن کاملGuessing and compression subject to distortion
The problem of guessing a random string is revisited. The relationship between guessing without distortion and compression is extended to the case when source alphabet size is countably infinite. Further, similar relationship is established for the case when distortion allowed by establishing a tight relationship between rate distortion codes and guessing strategies.
